Books I plan to read. I will update descriptions as I finish reading them.
I have actually already read this book, but the series is on my summer list so I am including the first book here. I read it about a month ago when it came out. It is set in Tempe, Arizona. I loved reading about areas that I used to live in. The author, Kevin Hearne, is a friend of mine. He is wickedly funny, creative, and talented. In the book Atticus is a 2000 year old druid trying to stay alive as creatures and gods try to kill him. He has a hilarious dog and his lawyer is a vampire. Very fun book.
The second book in the Iron Druid series was even more fun than the first. There is an all out witch war going on between the current residents of Tempe, AZ and a set of nasty German Witches who played on the side of the Nazis during WWII. Through it all, multiple magical beings are coming to Atticus to get him to go after Thor, who apparently nobody likes. Fun summer read.
Book three continues the fun. Thor, the Norse god of thunder, has ruined countless lives and killed scores of innocents. Despite multiple warnings, Atticus and Lief team up with a werewolf, a sorcerer, and an army of frost giants for an epic showdown against vicious Valkyries, angry gods, and the hammer-wielding Thunder Thug himself. I love when the books in a series come out one after the other without a long wait.
Finished Water for Elephants about an hour ago. It was an enjoyable read and I learned a a bit about circuses during the depression era. I liked the parallel stories of young and old Jacob. I actually would have liked to have spent more time with old Jacob. I particularly enjoyed the ending of the story.
I have been following the author, Todd Whitaker, on Twitter and am impressed by his insights. Therefore I decided to order this book. It wasn't available on Kindle, so I had to wait a while for the hard copy to arrive. This book describes the beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, and interactions that form the fabric of life in our best classrooms and schools. It focuses on the specific things that great teachers do ... that others do not. Finally received the book - read it in two sittings. It is inspiring and motivating. It reinforces what most of us intrinsically know to be good practice.

Definitely a unique perspective - narrating the story from the mind of the person with alzheimer's. I found myself pulled into the perspective, but would have liked a bit more story to go with it. I would still recommend it as an enlightening read.
Excellent book. It was very insightful and made a nice parallel to themes from To Kill a Mockingbird. It was interesting to get inside the head of a child with Asberger's. Part of the inspiration for the book was the Virginia Tech shooting, the storyline has ten-year-old Caitlyn dealing the loss of her older brother who was shot at the local middle school. The book deals with Caitlyn, her father, and the whole community finding ways to heal from the tragedy. I definitely recommend reading this book.
I loved this book. Many of the insights are self-affirming while simultaneously creating those ah-ha moments in how to better apply the principles in working with your own children, your co-workers, your students. Tapping into intrinsic motivations is something we want for ourselves and for those that we work with. Great book for parents, teachers, leaders, business owners, and human beings in general.
Sorta Like a Rock Star was a tragic yet hopeful book. It has wonderful characters and with quirks and goals and interesting lives. The main character is 17 but she reads much younger to me - she feel more like 13-15 in her use of language and emotional reactions. It was a quick and interesting read. Easily a good read aloud or dramatic interpretation material.
I don't know if I should be starting another addicting series - but too late! This is the 1st book in the Ranger's Apprentice series. It is a fun young-adult novel with solid characters and a fast pace. Will is an orphan living as a ward of the Baron. He wants to be selected to attend
Battleschool and become a knight like his father. He is devastated
when he isn’t chosen because of his small size. Instead he is chosen to become a Ranger’s Apprentice under the mysterious and legendary Ranger Halt. Soon he learns that being a Ranger is much more difficult, challenging and exciting then being a knight.

I have read a number of additional books and continue adding to my list this summer (cramming as much reading in as I can get away with before the school year starts) - but I have begun using goodreads.com to post about my reading. Feel free to follow me there.
